Chi Lambda LambdaThe Gold Standard

Our Story

Chartered December 7, 2004

How a meeting of three brothers became the Tenth District's Gold Standard.

On July 22, 2004, three brothers — Bro. John Ball, Bro. Terry Chambers, and Bro. Thomas Vaughn — met at the home of Bro. Thomas Vaughn to discuss plans to organize a chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in the South Suburbs. The rationale for this chapter was the lack of an Omega presence in the South Suburbs, where several hundred unfinancial Omega men resided.

Building the charter

The first information breakfast meeting was held at the Old Country Buffet in Lansing, Illinois on August 28, 2004, with approximately fifteen enthusiastic brothers in attendance. On September 25, 2004, the brothers met again at the Old Country Buffet to complete the necessary paperwork and collect funds for a Charter Petition. Approximately seventeen brothers attended. Bro. Terry Chambers and Bro. John Ball forwarded the paperwork and funds to International Headquarters on October 20, 2004.

On October 30, 2004, the brothers met to hear a status report on the Petition and to take up housing, Founders' Day, and temporary committee assignments — fifteen brothers were present. A further meeting on December 4, 2004 drew fourteen brothers. Then, on December 7, 2004, the Supreme Council approved the Petition for a chapter in Matteson, Illinois. The name assigned to the chapter was Chi Lambda Lambda.

Charter and first officers

The first official meeting was held on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Palmer Lake Industrial Park in Hazel Crest — headquarters of Valley Kingdom Ministries International. The brothers passed a proposed budget, elected officers for the 2004–2005 year, and unanimously voted to recognize Bro. Thomas Vaughn as an Honorary Charter Member.

On January 29, 2005, Chi Lambda Lambda hosted its formal Charter Ceremony at VKMI Headquarters, with approximately seventy brothers in attendance representing all the local chapters, alongside past District Representatives, area chapter Basilei and officers, District officers, State Representatives, and committee chairmen. The 37th Grand Basileus, Bro. George H. Grace, delivered a serious and inspiring charge on the duties of chapter officers and members before swearing in the newly elected officers. The Tenth District Representative, Bro. Kurmmell W. Knox, presented the Charter to the chapter's first Basileus, Bro. John Ball.

Service that travels

When a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, Chi Lambda Lambda mobilized the Chicago-area Omegas and other community organizations — together with New Faith Baptist Church of Matteson — and sent over two tons of food and needed goods to Haiti within a week. In 2011, when tornadoes tore through Alabama and the surrounding states, the chapter organized a relief drive with New Faith and Clintex Labs, delivering food, clothing, and necessities to the affected communities with the help of the Alpha Chi and Alpha Tau chapters in Alabama.

In 2011, while the Fraternity prepared its 100th-year celebration, Bro. Sean Long won the national contest to design the cover of the Centennial Oracle — a design that drew thousands of votes from Omega men across the country for its thoughtful and inspirational look at one hundred years of Omega Psi Phi.

The chapter since

Over the years the brothers of Chi Lambda Lambda have initiated ten lines into the Fraternity, hosted the 80th Tenth District Convention in 2017, sent brothers into district service — including a District State Representative and the 38th Tenth District Representative — and earned recognition as the 2024 Tenth District Graduate Chapter of the Year.

The chapter meets every second Saturday of the month at 9:00 AM at the Omega Center, 16958 Dixie Highway, Hazel Crest, Illinois — where visiting brothers are welcome to partake in the legendary XLL Breakfast Experience, a tradition started by Bro. Kenneth Taylor.

Twenty years strong

On December 7, 2024 — exactly twenty years after the Supreme Council approved its charter — Chi Lambda Lambda, Chapter No. 925, celebrated its 20th Charter Anniversary with a formal banquet honoring its charter members and two decades of brotherhood under the banner of the 2024–2025 fraternal year theme, “Lifting As We Climb.”
