Chapter Program
Social Action Program
Driving positive change through advocacy, community empowerment, and direct service across the South Suburbs of Chicago.
The Social Action Program is the heart of Chi Lambda Lambda's service to the community — addressing critical social issues, fostering leadership, and ensuring that local needs and priorities come first.
Signature initiatives
Community Food Pantry — a weekly partnership with St. Moses the Black Parish in Chicago. Every Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, more than 500 families receive groceries and essential household items, with chapter brothers organizing, distributing, and managing supplies.
Angel Tree — each December, in partnership with New Faith Baptist Church International, brothers deliver Christmas gifts to children of incarcerated parents. In 2024 the chapter helped organize and distribute more than 500 gift bags across roughly 30 of Chicago's 50 wards and 12 surrounding south suburban villages — reaching nearly 60 percent of the greater Chicago area.
Annual Turkey Basket Giveaway — complete Thanksgiving meal baskets, including turkeys and essentials, distributed to families experiencing economic hardship, in coordination with the Village of Hazel Crest.
Purple Swipe Night — the chapter's signature grocery-assistance event. At the second annual Purple Swipe Night (December 22, 2024, Jewel-Osco in Homewood), brothers discreetly covered $100 of groceries per family, delivering direct financial relief with dignity and privacy.
Annual Coat Drive — collection and distribution of new and gently used winter coats to south suburban residents most vulnerable to extreme winter conditions.
Blood Drives — the chapter supports the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Community Blood Drive with the Village of Flossmoor, Lambda Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Versiti Blood Centers, and helps lead Pan-Hellenic joint blood drives across Chicagoland that collect hundreds of pints.
Adopt-A-Highway — ongoing environmental stewardship of the chapter's adopted stretch of Dixie Highway.
Real Men Read — brothers visit local elementary schools to read with students, exposing young people to positive male role models who value literacy and learning.
Code Red Emergency Preparedness — a disaster-readiness collection partnership with the Joliet Area South Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
